二十世紀初期,因應紙張需求增加,人們嘗試開發造紙的新材料,而宜蘭地區製糖所剩下的甘蔗渣,也因此為宜蘭製紙產業揭開序幕。中興紙廠的製作層面相當廣泛,從主要的新聞紙,到其他文化用紙及工業用紙等,不僅是當時臺灣最大的造紙工廠,在東南亞地區更是生產量之最。
展覽透過「樹木」意象的展場空間述說紙廠發展,內容涵蓋紙張的生成、歷史背景乃至紙廠中的生活,細數宜蘭半世紀以來的造紙故事,開放性高的空間亦可讓觀者看見時間於建築中所刻畫的痕跡,感受時間與空間交織出的獨特氛圍。
In response to growing needs for paper in the early 20th Century, people explored all kinds of materials, including bagasse. These sugar cane waste in Yilan were used in newspapers, cultural and industrial purposes. Chung Hsing paper mill was the largest in production in Southeast Asia. PAPERMAKING OF CHUNG HSING introduces its history, paper production, historical backgrounds, and life in the mill. High ceiling and tree-like installation lead our attention to those marks on the building over time.
